Coping with redundancy



It is an unfortunate fact of life that along with employment comes the possibility of losing your job to redundancy. For many of us, losing a job can be a crushing emotional blow as well as financial. What you do for a living can mean much more than just a means of financial support, for some their career can be what defines them as a person.

Losing something so fundamental to our everyday lives and self-esteem, can take quite some getting over. There is a grieving process to go through, something that is worked through in the following stages: denial, anger, bargaining, sadness and acceptance. A person who has to work through these things needs a great deal of support from those around them. It is important to have a support system there for someone working through this process, and for friends and family to realise how much they can help just by being there.

The temptation to withdraw from life can be great in this situation with embarrassment being the chief cause. However, isolation is the last thing someone in this position needs with social contact being an essential ingredient in finding the motivation and encouragement to find a new job.

Unfortunately, even skilled workers can have trouble finding a new position. If unemployment should persist, it is important to keep an eye out for the signs of depression setting in. Things to look out for include changes in sleeping and eating patterns, withdrawal from favourite activities and a continuing ‘down’ mood. Never hesitate to seek help if symptoms of depression should occur. There is no shame in asking for help, and treatment for depression is easily available through your GP and it is very effective.

Through all of this grieving and recovery, it is important to keep practical matters in mind as well. If possible, obtain a reference from your former employer to add to your CV. Don’t sit around waiting for work to come to you, get out and find it for yourself. Pound the pavements, answer ads and don’t give up. Even consider filling your days by studying for new qualifications.

Remember you were able to get a job once, you can do it again.
