Oily skin – what can you do about it?

Oily skin is due to the oil produced by the sebaceous glands. These glands are larger and most active around the nose area of the face. This is why people experience the most problems in this area. The neck, chest and back are also areas where sebaceous glands are most heavily concentrated so it is in these places that body acne can be most common.

The production of oil is genetic however it may also be affected by hormones. Adolescence is a time when there can be a surge in the level of sex hormones (androgens) and this can create a problem with oily skin where there was none before.

Androgens enlarge and stimulate the sebaceous glands which causes them to produce more sebum. The extra sebum produces more fatty acids which close off pore openings. Despite this sebum is still very important for your skin, it helps to lubricate and carries with it the dead skin cells shed from hair follicles. If you have oily skin, the best way to prevent acne is to take measures to keep pores from getting clogged. A good beta hydroxy acid product will help with blackheads. Beta hydroxy acids exfoliate the pores.

There is no way to completely prevent oily skin from occurring, but hopefully these tips will help you keep the oil and acne under control:

If you wear cosmetics, you should have a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising each night, as well as washing your face in the morning. Cleansing removes all the old make-up and grime that accumulates during the day. Try a mild cleanser that cleanses without drying your skin.

  • Remove mascara with a cotton bud dipped in an eye-cleansing lotion
  • Remove eyeshadow by gently wiping with clean cotton wool moistened with the eye-cleansing lotion.
  • Dab a little face cleansing cream onto your palm and it spread it over the chin, nose, forehead and cheeks.
  • Massage the cream into your face using a gentle upward motion starting at the throat and working towards your forehead using your fingertips.
  • Gently massage the cream from the eyes to the nose.
  • Use tissue pads in both hands to remove the cream from your face, starting under the chin and working over the cheeks and on to the forehead.

Toners remove any traces of dirt, make-up or cleanser left after cleansing.

  • Immediately after cleansing, apply toner to the forehead and cheeks using a pad of cotton wool.
  • Apply the toner to the crevices around the nose and chin.

Your skin will not stay smooth and supple without the help of moisturiser. Moisturisers form a film over your skin to help fight the drying effects of weather.

  • Dot moisturiser lightly over al of the face using your fingertips.
  • Start with the fingers of both hands at the centre of your forehead and gently work the cream outwards. Pat the cream gently around the eye area.
  • Work the cream around your chin and mouth using the middle fingers of both hands.
  • Using upward strokes from collar-bone to chin, massage the cream over your throat with alternating hands.

When choosing cosmetics, buy water-based cosmetics and avoid oil based ones which will only aggravate the oily skin and create more blemishes. It is also very important to watch your diet but it is not sweets or chocolate that you need to watch, some doctors now believe that iodine aggravates acne and suggest eliminating or reducing fish and iodised salt in your diet.

Most important of all you must relax, doctors believe there may be a connection between acne and stress. The body is known to produce more androgens when a person is under stress. Even physical stresses such as illness or menstruation can trigger breakouts.
